Share your experiance

Everyone who has signed onto this site must have at least one horrific expierence with this group in your lifetime that you would like to share with the others. Please just give an overview of the specific incident and the end result. This site is about reality and not the fiction that is portrayed by cupe. People need to know the truth because after all it is the people who own this organ. and it is the people’s money that runs it; and if our children and our grandchildren are going to belong to a union body in the years to come, then they need to know the truth so they can watch and monitor organ. like this in an attempt to not have the same thing happen to them. A wise lady once said, sometimes you have to shut an organ. down in order to clean up the mess and start all over again. Of course she also went on to say, every outfit that has a big amount of money attached to it will become corrupt over time. These forms of organ.always attract the sorted types.

You know if I was going to share my experiences concerning Cupe I would need too much space to put the incidents and I would not need any space for the solutions as thetre is never any because these guys are tight and have a cover for everything!!!!!

As a PT staff at a 905 library for 11 years i have made attempts at union reform. Our cupe local's history is one of dysfunction due to a handful of morally bankrupt people who have cornered leadership of the two bargaining units and stifled the majority PT group through intimidation, suppression of information and harassment. The long-time rep for our large PT unit is one of a tiny grandfathered group with rights under a pre-existing contract. Together with the FT bargaining unit she's fought for what could be got by denying the majority basic protections.

On a previous negotiating committee i tried for standard clauses limiting management rights, enhancing job security and introducing seniority rights. In consequence i endured public attacks on my character, threats of expulsion from membership and my job, crude practical jokes and more. No help was forthcoming from cupe Ont. or cupe national. My only choice was to have nothing to do with union affairs and be unrepresented while paying dues.

Our group's vulnerability became obvious prior to contract negotiations now under way. A new CEO studied the labour situation and commissioned a public survey. The resulting plan recommended harmonizing working conditions for the two PT groups and creating more FT positions from within through attrition (we are an older workforce). This plan was the only one released to the public.

Management overrode the recommendations. They wanted to escalate FT hiring by laying off experienced PT staff and creating a new, lesser-paid less-qualified casual pool. Our Exec embraced management's plan from the start and told PT staff to prepare for indefinite layoff and find other jobs. To deflect demands, managment-member "discussion" sessions were arranged by the Exec.

Membership voted that we get a lawyer; exec summoned the regional rep to quash this. The rep was instead to write a letter to the Library Board, Town Councillors and Mayor, and a media press release. In our case there is no library or town budget deficit. This action too was obstructed by union exec., now scheming with Management to lay off, grandfather, and hire new staff for less money to work the extra hours we had under our existing contract.

For my efforts i was again singled out for union mobbing. I can still find no redress for this and am redirected by cupe national to the regional rep. She states there is no mechanism to investigate exec conduct including harassment, gross negligence, collusion with management or anything but failure to minimally handle a restricted range of grievances.

Anyone out there ever get cupe national or other support in fighting a corrupt executive/harassment by same?
